"I will introduce live, interactive bus tracking so you can see where your bus is and avoid long waits at the bus stop."

Whatever the pros and cons of this it's called the iBus project and has been in progress for quite some time -
http://www.tfl.gov.uk/corporate/projectsandschemes/technologyandequipment/2373.aspx

Clearly Boris has leapt at the opportunity to grab credit for something he had absolutely nothing to do with, something I predict he'll also do when new trains for the London Overground are delivered at the end of the year.

As for the arguments against iBus - yes it is probably expensive but people *like* to know when the next bus is coming. It gives them a warm fuzzy feeling inside. And there is a tangible benefit in that you might choose to get another bus going in the right direction if the one you really want is a long way off.

There's also a very strong benefit to knowing what the next stop is when you're on a bus - for anyone unfamiliar with the part of town they're in it's essential, and it's been a mainstay of bus/tram networks in many European cities for a long time. This is London catching up.

So how's Boris going to cut costs? Well, if I worked in a tube ticket office outside zone one I'd be sprucing up my CV, just in case...

[...] the importance of independence Trying to pass something off as one thing when it’s another is something i think we’re used to from politicans of all persuasions… No matter how trivial or important… but I am glad to see sense when it comes to a supposedly independent investigation into the possible financial irregularities so over-stated by andrew gilligan and i think it’s quite right for the former Mayor to cooperate in the appropriate way (i.e. not for an investigation run by somebody with clear political bias and which has been over-emphasizing any allegations)… [...]
